Oak Cliff restaurant-bar Ten Bells Tavern opened last week with a menu item that sounds oh-so nutty. Called the “butty,” it’s a French fry sandwich, which is to say, two slices of bread enclosing a filling of French fries. The butty was born in England — shocker — home to such delicacies as mushy peas, where it was crafted as a way to avoid wasting stale French fries. But Ten Bells owner Meri Dahlke promises that her fries are fresh not stale, dammit, along with a layer of melted cheese and house-made Jack Daniels mustard on the side. Dahlke, a big Anglophile, named the place after Ten Bells Pub, a Jack the Ripper haunt in London; if you can’t bring yourself to utter the word butty, she also has fish ‘n’ chips.
